10 THINGS TO DO AT THE FIELD & COUNTRY FAIR

The Field & Country Fair is a truly memorable day out for those with a passion for the countryside. With over 250 exhibitors, you’ll be able to learn from geniune experts, visit stands with the best of what we actually want and enjoy proper scoff. Here are 10 things to do at the Field & Country Fair.

Meet our contributors and the experts at Gunmakers Quarter.

1. GUNMAKERS QUARTER: Visit stands dedicated to pigeon shooting, wildfowling, stalking, game shooting and woodcock conservation amongst others. Meet the experts and our contributors to hear about their experiences and share stories whilst also getting advice and tips on which stands to visit for new products and proven ones.

There will be plenty of shooting competitions with cash prizes up for grabs

2. SHOOTING LINE: Visit Barbury Shooting School for two stands offering fun flush shoots. Or try Oxfordshire Shooting Schools’ ‘Have a Go’ stand with fully qualified APSI instructors giving an introduction to shotgun shooting or try a gun before buying it from their stand on Gunmaker’s Quarter. Shoot a 25 bird sequence from a Grouse Butt with experienced grouse shots with Atkin Grant & Lang, or enter their daily high gun, ladies and junior competitions. BASC will also be on hand offering tuition and advice on gun safety and there will be an EJ Churchill clinic.

Meet George Digweed and hear his expert advice on improving your shooting.

3. MEET GEORGE DIGWEED: Meet the world’s best shot, George Digweed, at the pigeon and game shooting stand. He will take questions on his extraordinary competitive achievements and give advice on improving your pigeon and gameshooting.

4. THE WORKING DOG RING: See parades of working dogs with expert commentary from Neil Varney, owner of training club Twistmount gundogs and Shooting Times contributor, and Jim Winters. Neil Varney and his team of Twistmount Gundogs will also be in the ring twice daily, with his spaniels and his labrador retrievers. Nick Gregory from Misselchalke gundogs will be doing a demonstration each day with cocker spaniels.

5. THE GUNDOG DEMONSTRATION ARENA AND TRAINING CLINIC: Howard Kirby, renowned gundog trainer from Lains Shooting School Limited and Mullenscote Gundogs, will run group and one to one training and advice on different techniques and approaches involved in gundog training. Also, have your dog assessed against puppy, novice, intermediate and advanced criteria.

6. PUGS AND DRUMMERS: Visit Simon Whitehead of Pakefield Ferrets and Shooting Times contributor and his team of rabbiting aficionados, who will be showing ferreting to an audience. Also see equipment and ferrets and hear expert advice.

Falcolnry mews will have their Birds of Prey on show, including golden eagles.

7. FALCONRY: Don’t miss the Falconry Mews with a huge variety of Bird of Prey species, including kestrels, barn owls, peregrines, hawk eagles and golden eagles. Visit the arenas for hunting with falcons, training dogs for falconry, ferreting and children’s sessions amongst other topics. The Children’s Area will be an interactive experience for the smalls, visit one of the displays to see the birds in action or visit the falconry clubs for advice on taking up the sport.

No fair is complete without proper scoff.

8. GAME COOKERY THEATRE: No fair is complete without proper scoff and fortunately we’ll have plenty. The Eat Wild brothers, Will and Calum Thompson, will be putting on two demonstrations a day, as will River Cottage’s Tim Maddams, who has just completed the ‘River Cottage Game Handbook’. Jose Souto will be amongst the chefs preparing and serving three course meals on a beat the clock, with members of the audience taste testing. And Rachel Green will be on hand with favourite and new ideas for shoot lunches.

9. TAXIDERMY: Demonstrations by Will Matthews, including deer preparation and showcasing his taxidermy skills on a deer head. Learn how to get stuffing from an expert.

10. VALUATIONS: Holt Auctioneers will be holding two sessions a day. Bring your shooting memorabilia for valuation.
